HISTORIA:
En 1961, Phil Spector graba a The Top notes con esta canción compuesta por Phil Medley y Bert Russell usando su ahora clásica tècnica “Pared de Sonido”, que era un sonido denso y reverberante que se reproducía muy bien en las radios AM y la cual constaba de un nùmero de guitarras acùsticas y elèctricas que grababan las mismas partes al unísono y se añadìa arreglos mùsicales de músicos de orquestas grabando el sonido en una càmara de eco.

Al productor Bert Berms no le gustò la grabación de Spector y pensò que habìa echado a perder la canción, Para 1962, los Isley Brothers deciden grabarla con Berns en la producción y Ronald Isley en la voz principal y la canción se convirtió en un hit llegando al nùmero 2 en los charts de rythm and blues de USA superando las expectativas de los Isley que no habìan tenido un hit en 3 años desde Shout!.

Los Beatles grabaron la canción (probablemente el mejor cover del grupo) y fue lanzada en su primer álbum, Please, please me en 1963 siendo un total èxito y mostrando el camino de como un grupo de rock puede grabar una canción soul. Twist and shout fue la ùltima canciòn grabada de ese álbum aprovechando la voz ya ronca que tenìa Lennon al haber estado cantando casi sin parar las otras canciones durante las grabaciones, y fue grabada en una sola toma en una ejecución casi perfecta del cuarteto. Esta canciòn se convierte claramente en el símbolo de la beatlemanìa en UK.

Cuatro meses después del lanzamiento de Please please me, Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, grupo que habìa sido fichado por Decca en lugar de los Beatles (audicionaron el mismo dìa) y que hasta entonces no habìa tenido algún èxito, (luego, conocidos por el tema Do you love me?) irónicamente se cuelgan del carro de la beatlemanìa y lanzan tambièn Twist and Shout, llegando al nùmero 4 de los charts británicos.

Luego, la canción ha sido grabada por innumerables grupos y artistas, contando con The Iguanas en 1964, The Troggs, Johnny Rivers, Mamas and Papas, Echo and the Bunnymen, Chaka Demus and Pliers, entre otros.
